What is AI and what it means for the recruitment process

Artificial intelligence or AI, if deciphered in simple words, means ‘machines which can think’. However, there is a lot more to AI than its literal connotation, as artificial intelligence powered software and tools also have the ability to learn from small inputs and translate this information into resolving more complicated tasks.
We can say that artificial intelligence is a wide-ranging branch of computer science which is involved with building machines that are able to simulate a thinking process similar to the human mind.
Benefits of AI in recruitment department
AI tools are being used in the departments like marketing, customer service, recruitment and more. These smart machines are a boon to any organization, especially in the area of recruitment. They take care of the tedious and repetitive tasks like screening resumes, providing an instant guide to your company’s culture, policies and ethics, which a candidate can view even before submitting their resume to you.
The history of AI: How we got to where we are today with AI
Much before the term AI was coined, the simple question posed by the mathematician Alan Turing – Can machines think? – started scientists thinking towards the direction of what we see as AI today. Alan Turing got the inspiration for this question while he helped the Allied Forces in breaking the Nazi encryption machine called Enigma.
Later he wrote a paper in 1950 that was titled – ‘Computing machinery and Intelligence’ followed by a Turing Test and this established the fundamental goal and vision of artificial intelligence.
Others like the researcher and Google engineer Francois Chollet, Stuart Russell, Peter Norvig etc. carried this idea forward and conducted in-depth research in order to make AI a reality. The best part is that AI has not stopped evolving and efforts are on to make it as close to thinking and working like the human mind, as possible.
What AI can do: The capabilities of AI in the recruitment process
Apart from the tasks mentioned above, the AI tools can also help with performing a background check of the candidates with the help of the information provided in their resumes. They also help with the interview process, by asking some typical and repetitive, but necessary questions.
Applications of AI in recruitment: Ways in which it can be used in the recruitment process
You can use AI to keep the talent pool engaged without much ado. You can access a larger volume of candidates because the initial screening is done by an AI machine and it allows only relevant candidates to reach you. This in turn allows for intelligent and proactive sourcing, using specific metrics to rank candidates, improve candidate experience and automate the administrative tasks.
Future of AI in recruitment: What we can expect in the future for the use of AI in recruitment
The trend of using AI powered tools in recruitment will increase steeply in the coming few years. As human resources become more expensive and the tasks involved in the recruitment process of a company grows so will the role played by AI in recruitment. Hence, we can expect better and smarter machines simulating the human thinking process take more responsibilities off the human shoulders.
